Growth Form: Acaulescent perennials.

Stems: Subterranean stems.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, spiraled, densely crowded. Blades lanceolate. Apex with a spine. Base sessile. Margins spinose at least toward base. Veins parallel. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in large, terminal, paniculate inflorescences, bulbils often forming in axils of bracteoles after flowering. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Tepals 6, white or greenish white, essentially distinct, subequal but inner ones wider. Stamens 6; filaments with a spongy thickening near middle, inserted at base of tepals. Ovary inferior, 3-celled; ovules numerous per cell; style filiform to subulate; stigma small.

Fruit: Capsules cylindrical; with loculicidal dehiscience. Seeds black; flat.
